Wanted Dover man apprehended after struggle with police

DOVER — A wanted 35-year-old Dover man was apprehended after a struggle with police Monday, authorities said.

Dover Police said Sean Brownawell was sought for a probation violation and had a warrant for his arrest by Delaware State Police when taken into custody in the area of North Bradford and West Division streets. Dover Police spokesperson Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said officers assisted Probation and Parole in the apprehension after being called at 2:24 p.m.

Police said Mr. Brownawell sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus where he was treated and released.

Mr. Brownawell had a spit sack mask placed over his head, which Cpl. Schmid said is “used to prevent individuals from spitting on officers or others. The material is usually a mesh and it is breathable. The goal is to prevent the individual from spitting on anyone.”

Red spots were seen on the mask.

“It is my understanding that Mr. Brownawell did sustain some injury as noted in the (news) release which caused him to bleed,” Cpl. Schmid said.

Mr. Brownawell was taken to the Dover Police Department where he was charged with resisting arrest with force and offensive touching (three counts). He was released on his own recognizance and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on the violation of probation charge, police said.
