Voorheis: US Senate bill would expand early screenings for cancer

Posted

In Delaware, we have one of the highest rates of cancer in the U.S.: One in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the state will experience a cancer diagnosis in their lifetimes.

While science and technology have the potential to catch cancer in its early stages, what’s needed now is a change in policy that would allow older adults to access these tests through Medicare.

Medicare enrollees should have access to multicancer screening tests. Early checks for multiple cancers have the potential to significantly reduce the burden of the disease by catching it in its initial stages, saving lives and lowering the cost of treatment down the road.

We encourage Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., to join Sen. Chris Coons and Rep. Sarah McBride, both D-Del., in co-sponsoring and prioritizing the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (Senate Bill 339).
