DOVER - Virginia Marie Welgan, of Dover, died Saturday June 25, 2011, after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma, at home surrounded by her family. She was 73. Mrs. Welgan was born Sept. 16, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Lawrence G. Scanlon and Catherine Cole Scanlon. She had graduated from Mt. Mercy College in Pittsburgh with a BA in Biology and completed her Master's in Educational Counseling from Southern Illinois University. She had first worked as a Medical Technologist at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Welgan and her husband John moved to Delaware in 1962, when he was assigned to Dover Air Force Base. She was a homemaker until 1972 when she returned to work. Mrs. Welgan worked at the Dover Air Force Base education office and upon receiving her Master's degree she went to work for Delaware State University. She returned to the DAFB Education office where she retired in 2001. Mrs. Welgan was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Dover, the American Association of University Women, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Mrs. Welgan was a member of the Officer's Wives Quilt Group and the Heisey Heritage Society. She also enjoyed Thursday morning mahjongg with the ladies at Maple Dale Country Club. She was an avid reader and lover of antiques. She very much looked forward to her weekly card games with the "Golden Girls." She is survived by her husband of 49 years, John P. Welgan of Dover; sons, John M. Welgan of Dover, Robert L. Welgan and his wife Stephanie of Portland, Ore.; daughter, Karen A. Taylor and her husband Jim of Dover; brothers, Lawrence Scanlon Jr. of Fairborn, Ohio, James Scanlon of Erie, Pa.; sister, Jeanne Scheele of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren, Katie, Jack Welgan, Mark and Evan Taylor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 p.m. Thursday June 30, 2011 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St., Dover. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10). Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
