Virginia Leager

DOVER - Virginia Leager, of Downs Chapel, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 29, at the Cadia Rehabilitation Center, Dover. She was 86. She was born on Aug. 29, 1925, in Cheswold as one of ten children. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Goldie (Armstrong) Shahan. She worked on the dairy farm with her husband Paul N. Leager Sr. who passed away in 1999. They were married 57 years. She previously worked in Smyrna for Moffett and Knotts Bussing as a school bus driver and a waitress at Bakers restaurant. Virginia also provided adult foster care at her home, Downs Acres. Virginia was a very active churchgoer and attended the Smyrna Wesleyan Church at the time of her death. She was very talented in singing and playing the piano, guitar, harp and accordion. She sang in many local churches and prisons singing her old style gospel music. She also was a performer with the CTM Players and played under the stage name of "Shay" Leager. They presented their music and drama in hospitals, churches, retreats and other venues. She loved to sing for the Lord and was a prayerful person. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Leager was also preceded in death by five brothers, Norris, Paul Jr., Daniel, Gamalle, and Crawford Shahan; two sisters, Naomi Hurd and Jeanette Case; a son, Paul Leager Jr.; two granddaughters, Candace Mitchell and Kimberly Scott; a daughter-in-law, Joanne Leager; and a great-grandson, Brian Ford. She is survived by three children, Dianne Mitchell and her husband Sam, David Leager Sr., Shirley Foskey and her friend Hank Huntenburg; nine grandchildren Tammy Wagner and her husband Joel; Sammy Mitchell Jr. and his wife Trina; Jimmy Mitchell and his wife Tina; Judy Pierce and her husband Burt; Tina Bryant, Timmy Leager; Michael Leager and his wife Jodi; David Leager Jr. and his wife Tina, Mark Leager and his wife Tami; and 14 great-grandchildren, Jamie and John Ford, Karli Paige, P.J., and Dawson Mitchell, Mitche Pierce, Dustin, Dylan, Dalton, Matthew, Kimberly and Michael Leager and Jordian and Myranda Bryant. She is also survived by two brothers, Levi Shahan and Joseph Shahan and wife Jane and many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Virginia spent many years with her special companion Ruby, her beloved Pomeranian. Services will be 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna. Flowers are welcome, however contributions in Mrs. Leager's memory may be sent to the Smyrna Wesleyan Church, PO Box 381, Smyrna, DE 19977.
