COACHES: Delaware — Danny Rocco (31-22, 5th season at UD; 121-64, 15th season overall); Villanova — Mark Ferrante (29-20, 5th season at Villanova).
NATIONAL RANKING: Villanova is ranked No. 8 in the Stats FCS poll.
CAA: Delaware — 3-4; Villanova — 6-1.
LAST WEEK: Delaware lost to Richmond, 51-27; Villanova beat Stony Brook, 33-14.
SERIES: Villanova leads, 31-22-1.
LAST MEETING: Delaware won, 27-20, on April 17.
KEYS TO THE GAME: Today, Delaware will play its unprecedented 19th and final game in the past nine months. It is 12-6 in those contests. But the Blue Hens had decidedly different results in the fall than in the spring, when they reached the NCAA FCS semifinals. After snapping a nine-game losing streak against the rival Wildcats, a second-straight win over Villanova would leave Delaware feeling a lot better about its marathon calender year. The fact that the Hens can also keep the Wildcats from capturing their first CAA title since 2012 would be the icing on the cake. ... Clearly the Hens have to play better on defense than they did against Richmond a week ago. While the Spiders’ 51-point outburst was definitely fueled by Delaware’s three second-half turnovers, the Hens did allow 24 points in the first half and had trouble getting Richmond off the field. The knowledge that Villanova is second in the league in both points per game (32.8) and yards (391.8) is a little scary for UD. In two previous starts vs. Delaware, Wildcat QB Daniel Smith has thrown for 521 yards with 7 TDs and only one INT. ... Despite last week’s loss, the Hens’ offense probably had its best performance in six games with QB Zach Gwynn as the starter. According to Rocco, the problem was that Gwynn just got a little too confident and forced some throws that ended in bad INTs. Obviously, those kinds of mistakes can’t happen again today if Delaware is going to have a chance at the upset. It also wouldn’t hurt if the Hens’ dormant running game showed some signs of life. Delaware hasn’t run for more than 44 yards in any of its last three league games.
NOTES: Delaware’s seniors will be honored before the game but it’s not entirely clear which players are playing their final game and which might still come back next fall. Some of the veterans who are definitely in their final college game are RB Dejoun Lee, WR Gene Coleman, OL David Kroll, OL Ben Trent, CB Nijuel Hill, LB Andrew Pawlowski and LB Dae’lun Darien. ... It will be interesting to see if QB Nolan Henderson (Smyrna) is part of that group. He can still return next year as a grad student. There’s an outside chance that Henderson, who’s missed the last six games after having hernia surgery, could make an appearance in the game. ... Caravel grad Ethan Potter is a starting safety for Villanova as a freshman. ... Thanks in large part to its long losing streak against Villanova, Delaware hasn’t won its final game of the season since 2015 when it won at Elon. That’s the Hens’ only season-ending victory in the last nine years.
