Vernon Dwight David, 88

SMYRNA - Vernon Dwight David, of Smyrna, made the transition to a better life on Monday, June 23, 2008, at his home. He was 88.

He was born in Smyrna to Ruth Slaughter and Charles David.

Vernon's roots were deep in Delaware. He was one of the many descendants of Priscilla Kitchen, Quakeress from Salem in the 1600s.

He grew up in Dover, but most of his life was spent in New Castle County.

Talented and creative, Vernon could repair or build anything. He was truly a master of all crafts.

He loved sports, the water and fishing.

Vernon was in the Army Air Corps and retired from DuPont Chambers Works after 40 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret "Peggy" David; and three children and six grandchildren, Douglas (Janice) of New Castle and grandson Neil, Brian P. (Kate) of Smyrna and grandchildren Nina and Brian C., and Christina (Jack) Hamby of Virginia Beach, Va., and grandchildren Alex, Margaret and James.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Sheila and Barbara; sisters, Priscilla Grate, Louise Bloth and Annamay Kelly; and brothers, Charles David and Robert Morgan.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of choice.

Arrangements by Chandler Funeral Homes.
