MILFORD - Vermadel D. Kirby, of Milford, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011, at home. She was 89. She was born in Milford, the daughter of the late Roy and Eva (Cohee) Downs. Vermadel was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, hunting and horse racing. She was a very loving and giving person who always gave a lot more than she ever received. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian Downs and Goldie Eckenrode; and a brother, Cohee Downs. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Donald F. Kirby; four children, Joan Read of Webster, Texas, Benjamin Kirby of Powder Springs, Ga., William H. Kirby of Glass, Va., and John M. Kirby of Milford; brother, Delbert Downs of Ridgeland, S.C.; sisters, Evelyn Phillips of Landsburg, Fla., and Selma Portcalos of Millsboro, and several grandchildren. Services will be private. Arrangements handled by Berry-Short Funeral Home, Milford.
