Vergie Ellen Pettyjohn Lewis

LINCOLN - Vergie Ellen Pettyjohn Lewis, of Upper Marlboro, Md., died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 in Medstar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton, Md., after a long illness. She was 92 years old. Mrs. Lewis was born Sept. 22, 1921 in Lincoln. She was the daughter of the late Georgia Hill Pettyjohn and the late Robert H. Pettyjohn. She was raised in the Lincoln area and attended high school and college at Delaware State University. In 1946, she graduated with a degree in elementary education. She married Elwood Lewis, Sr. on Sept. 6, 1945. Out of that union came seven children. She was employed by Delaware State University for 30 years where she was a member of the housekeeping department. After retiring, she was self-employed as a housekeeper for various families in the Dover area until 2005. In her earlier years, she enjoyed playing horseshoes with her husband and watching the Philadelphia Phillies. In her later years, she enjoyed listening to music, watching TV, and playing with the children in her family. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by four sisters, Carrie Brown, Helen Pettyjohn, Bessie Benson, and Gladys Thomas; two brothers, Roy Pettyjohn and Louis Pettyjohn; two daughters, Virginia R. Moore and Cathryn J. Lewis; and one great-grandson, Wayne Scott. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn M. Scott (William) of Harrington, Rose M. Clemente (Milton) of Buffalo, N.Y., Norma E. Williams (Meredith) of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two sons, Elwood Lewis , Jr. (Ina) of Syracuse, N.Y., and Robert W. Lewis (Marshelliese) of Norfolk, Va.; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover; where friends may visit two hours prior to service. www.benniesmithfuneralhome.com
