Urie Bernard Glass, 70 DOVER - Urie Bernard Glass was born to Dorothy Virginia Glass and Odell Solace Glass in Wyoming, on June 14, 1938. He was the oldest of five boys. He departed this life and took his eternal rest on Sunday, August 10, 2008. He was 70. Bernard attended public schools in Kent County. He began his 22-year distinguished military career in the U.S. Army in 1956, achieving the rank of Captain in the Maryland Defense Force. During his service in the armed forces, he held many positions, including that of Brigade Command Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer, and small aircraft and helicopter pilot. He was especially proud of his meritorious service in the Republic of Vietnam, where he bravely served his country there for an impressive 35 months and 14 days. In fact, in 1979, he was voted one of Maryland's 10 Outstanding Vietnam Veterans. In addition to having received the U.S. Army's Meritorious Service Medal in 1978, he also received many superior performance awards and administrator citations. After he left the Army in 1978, Urie's illustrious civil service career began immediately thereafter, when he held management positions in the National Alliance of Business in Baltimore, Md., and in the Bureau of Policy Development. In 1982, he founded and served as Executive Director of Black Veterans of All Wars, Inc., in Baltimore, Md., and in Dover. He also served as an advisor and service officer at the Maryland Regional Office of Veterans Administration, and he held many other posts involving veteran affairs that are too numerous to mention. He was also a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, and his political enthusiasm led him into his most recent run for Mayor of the City of Dover. On June 22, 2003, Bernard married the love of his life, Martha Mickens. He also loved the Lord, and worshipped with Martha at Pentecostals of Dover Church. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as his paternal and maternal grandparents. He leaves to cherish his memory his lovely wife, Martha of Dover; his four brothers, Edwin Glass of Wyoming, James Glass (wife, Mae) of Dover, Odell Glass, Dothan, Ala., and Carlton Glass (wife, Janette) of Dover. He also leaves a daughter, Stephanie; three grandchildren; four special nephews (Antoine, Lamont, Markell, and Terrence Glass); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, in the First Baptist Church, Caesar Rodney Avenue, Camden, where friends may also call one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be in Sharon Hill Memorial Gardens, Dover. Arrangements are being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
