CAMBRIDGE – Health and fitness took steps in the right direction on Oct. 5, during Walk Maryland Week, when a group organized by Groove City Trekkers and Cambridge Main Street strode through downtown to promote physical activity.
The group of women met in front of the Department of Social Services on Race Street, headed over to Long Wharf, and then back to Race Street.
A statement from the Maryland Department of Health said, “Walk Maryland Day is a celebration of our official state exercise - walking! It’s also a call to action to promote awareness about regular walking for physical activity and improved health, engaging Marylanders with fun walks.”
The Groove City Trekkers is a group associated with GirlTrek, a public health nonprofit for African-American women and girls.
A statement from the group said, “With nearly 100,000 neighborhood walkers, GirlTrek encourages women to use walking as a practical first step to inspire healthy living, families, and communities. As women organize walking teams, they mobilize community members to support monthly advocacy efforts and lead a civil rights-inspired health movement.”
“Walk Maryland was Great,” a statement from Groove City Trekkers said. “We walked 1.70 miles in a little less than 30 minutes. Thanks, ladies, for joining the Groove City Trekkers and Cambridge Main Street on your lunch break for the 3rd Annual Walk Maryland.”
Chareka Harris, who works at the Judy Center, enjoyed the experience. On social media she thanked organizers from Main Street and the Trekkers, saying, “It was awesome! Thank you for doing this, Katie Clendaniel and Dormaim E. Green. My staff enjoyed themselves!”
The event got positive reviews from Cambridge Main Street, as well. A statement from the group said, “Today’s lunchtime walk was so fun! We got to make our way past the Ironman Long Wharf village and enjoy historic High Street and downtown Cambridge on a beautiful sunny day! Thanks to the Groove City Trekkers and Dormaim E. Green - trekker extraordinaire - for making this possible!”
