US--MEXICO-SINALOA-CARTEL
Long-elusive Mexican drug lord Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada pleads guilty in US
SUMMARY: Former Mexican cartel kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to his role in the violent drug trade that for years flooded the U.S. with cocaine, heroin and other illicit substances. The longtime leader in the Sinaloa cartel entered his plea Monday in a Brooklyn federal court. Prosecutors have said they won’t seek the death penalty against the 77-year-old Zambada. He was arrested in Texas last year. Prosecutors say that under the leadership of Zambada and Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the Sinaloa cartel evolved from a regional player into the world’s largest drug trafficking organization.

US--FLORIDA IMMIGRATION DETENTION CENTER
Feds fight to keep ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ open amid legal battle as 3rd challenge is filed
SUMMARY: The federal government has asked a Miami judge to pause her order to close an immigration detention center in Florida’s Everglades, known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” Attorneys for the Department of Homeland Security say the closure would disrupt immigration law enforcement. They requested a decision by Monday. The federal agency says the facility, which opened in July, is needed due to overcrowded detention centers in Florida. Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe oppose the request, arguing the project threatens sensitive wetlands. Civil rights groups on Friday filed a third lawsuit over practices at the facility, saying Florida has no authority to operate it.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia detained by ICE in Baltimore, faces deportation efforts
SUMMARY: Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been detained by immigration authorities in Baltimore and faces efforts by the Trump administration to deport him to Uganda. However, a blanket court order automatically pauses any effort to immediately deport Abrego Garcia and other immigrants who are challenging their detention. Abrego Garcia became the face of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies when he was wrongfully deported in March to El Salvador. He was returned to the U.S. in June, only to face human-smuggling charges that his lawyers have called preposterous. He was released from jail on Friday to await trial. He was detained Monday morning.

It was not immediately clear what Trump was referring to, but South Korea has been in political turmoil since former leader Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law last December, leading to his removal. Trump is set to meet Lee, elected in June, at the White House on Monday. The leaders are expected to discuss trade and defense, including U.S. troop presence in South Korea. TEN--US OPEN-CHAOS
The US Open’s chaos includes rowdy crowds, long commutes and the smells of weed or burgers
SUMMARY: There are some tennis players, such as Frances Tiafoe or Madison Keys or Ben Shelton, who can’t wait for the U.S. Open to come around each year, with its boisterous crowds, its bold-faced names in the stands, its music at changeovers, its buzz. To them, the louder the better. Sometimes, though, it all can get out of control, as happened during a match that ended after midnight. There was a delay of more than five minutes while spectators booed and shouted — egged on by 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev, who was angered by chair umpire Greg Allensworth’s ruling after a photographer interrupted play by going on court.

TEN--US OPEN-DATING SHOW
The US Open dating show: How Grand Slam tennis tournaments are shooting for a Gen Z audience
SUMMARY: Over the course of the past week, eight couples have gone on their first dates across the U.S. Open’s grounds — on camera. The dates will air to the public across the course of the tournament. The eight-episode YouTube series that made its debut Sunday comes amidst an explosive moment for dating shows. “Love Island,” “Love is Blind” and “The Bachelor” are just a few shows in the genre that have dominated young American audiences in the past year. But, perhaps more importantly, it also comes at an important time for content created by Grand Slam tournaments.

TEN--US OPEN-SUNDAY START
US Open tennis players don’t necessarily think more is better when it comes to starting on Sunday
SUMMARY: The U.S. Open is starting a day earlier than usual. Day 1 of singles play is Sunday instead of Monday this year, expanding the year’s last Grand Slam tournament from 14 days to 15. It is part of a trend in the sport. The French Open began on a Sunday in 2006 for the first time and the Australian Open followed suit in 2024. Now the U.S. Open is joining them, leaving Wimbledon as the only major tournament that still gets going on Monday. Not all of the players love the idea of having a longer tournament, even if it comes with hikes in prize money.

TEN--US OPEN
Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz get the American men off to a strong start at the US Open
SUMMARY: There’s a larger contingent of Americans in the U.S. Open men’s bracket than at any time in the past quarter-century. Might be the best crop in nearly that long, too, and two of the leaders — Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton — got the tournament started on Sunday with dominant performances. Shelton is the No. 6 seed and twice a Grand Slam semifinalist and needed just 2 hours, 7 minutes to get past qualifier Ignacio Buse of Peru 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Fritz is the No. 4 seed and was the runner-up to Jannik Sinner at Flushing Meadows a year ago. He needed about 10 fewer minutes to move on with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 victory over yet another U.S. man, Emilio Nava.

SUMMARY: Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 48th home run Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 48th home run on Sunday against the Athletics, tying the single-season record for catchers set by Salvador Perez with the Kansas City Royals in 2021. The switch-hitting Raleigh, batting from the right side, homered off A’s left-hander Jacob Lopez in the first inning to make it 2-0. It was the 39th longball Raleigh has delivered as a catcher this year. He has nine while serving as a designated hitter. Perez hit 15 home runs as a DH in 2021, and 33 at catcher. Only four other players in big league history have hit at least 40 homers in a season while primarily playing catcher.

GLF--RYDER CUP-TRUMP
Trump says he’ll be at Ryder Cup and he thinks captain Keegan Bradley should play
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says he’s coming to the Ryder Cup. And he thinks U.S. captain Keegan Bradley should be playing in the Sept. 26-28 matches against Europe. Trump posted on his social media site that he would be at Bethpage Black for the opening round. The Ryder Cup already is the most flag-waving, raucous event in golf. It has gone up a notch this time because of the venue. Bethpage Black on New York’s Long Island is notorious for having the rowdiest fans. Bradley is debating whether he should be the first playing captain in the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963.
