US--PENNSYLVANIA PLANT EXPLOSION

Video shows steel workers scrambling into wreckage left by explosion that killed 2 in Pennsylvania

SUMMARY: After an explosion rocked a steel plant outside Pittsburgh, workers scrambled into the wreckage alongside firefighters directing streams of water. By the time the scene was secure, two people were dead and more than 10 others were injured, including one who spent hours trapped in rubble left Monday by the blast that was powerful enough to shake nearby homes. Video from Pittsburgh television station WTAE showed workers in orange jumpsuits and hardhats running toward the wreckage at the U.S. Steel coking plant in Clairton. Investigators were working Tuesday to determine the cause of the blast, which jolted a region of the state synonymous with steel for more than a century.

US--CDC-CAMPUS SHOOTING

Shooter attacked CDC headquarters to protest COVID-19 vaccines

SUMMARY: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the man who fired more than 180 shots with a long gun at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wanted to send a message against COVID-19 vaccines. GBI Director Chris Hosey said 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White also recently verbalized thoughts of suicide, which led to law enforcement being contacted several weeks before the shooting. He said White broke into his father’s safe to get the long gun, and fatally shot DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose during the attack. The GBI said more than 500 shell casings were recovered from the scene.

US--ELECTION 2026-REDISTRICTING

Texas Republicans plan another special session to deliver Trump more GOP congressional seats

SUMMARY: Texas Republican leaders say they’re prepared to end their stalemated legislative special session and immediately begin another standoff with Democrats in the GOP’s efforts to redraw congressional maps as directed by President Donald Trump. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows confirmed the plans Tuesday during a brief session that marked another failure to meet the required attendance standards. Dozens of Democrats have left the state and left the GOP majority unable to move forward with its gerrymandering attempt. Burrows said lawmakers will not reconvene again until Friday. If Democrats are still absent, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said he will end the current session and will call another.

US--UVALDE SCHOOL SHOOTING

Uvalde school records show teenage gunman’s spiral before 2022 shooting

SUMMARY: School district officials have released text messages, personnel files and student records of the shooter from the 2022 attack at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 students and two teachers. Monday’s document release follows a yearslong legal battle over public access to the material. Media organizations, including The Associated Press, had sued the district and county in 2022 for the release of their records. It is not the public’s first glimpse inside the slow law enforcement response to the shooting. Last year, city officials in Uvalde released police body camera videos from their officers and 911 calls.

Police say they do not know the motive of the suspect, a man in his 30s who they say has “a mental health history.” Authorities say the suspect fled the scene in a stolen car, crashed the car then stole another from a dealership before he was taken into custody. Police say they believe one person who was shot owned the car the suspect stole. An adult and child died at the scene, while another adult died at a hospital.

‘What is happening?’ Milwaukee area recovers from record rain and flooding

SUMMARY: The Milwaukee area is drying out after weekend rain hits unofficial state records. Unofficially, more than 14 inches fell in less than 24 hours in one spot, causing rivers to flood, washing out vehicles, and cutting power to thousands. As of Monday morning, no fatalities have been reported. Road closures are more isolated, and flood warnings continued in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties. About 2,000 homes remain without power. Forecasters predict more rain Monday night, but not like the weekend deluge. The National Weather Service says four rivers in the Milwaukee area hit record-high levels over the weekend.

CDC union condemns vaccine misinformation after shooter blamed COVID vaccine for depression

SUMMARY: A Georgia man who had blamed the COVID-19 vaccine for making him suicidal has been identified as the shooter who fired shots at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters, killing a police officer. An official who spoke on condition of anonymity identified the man as Patrick Joseph White. The official says the man was armed with five guns, including at least one long gun. Authorities said the 30-year-old suspect initially tried to get into the CDC’s headquarters in Atlanta but was stopped by guards before driving to a pharmacy across the street and opening fire Friday. SUMMARY: A federal judge in New York says transcripts of the secret grand jury testimony that led to the sex trafficking indictment of Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell should not be released. The judge suggested Monday the Justice Department’s real motive for wanting the transcripts unsealed was to fool the public with an “illusion” of transparency. The Justice Department hasn’t commented. Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison term after her conviction on sex trafficking charges for helping procure girls for Epstein to sexually abuse. SUMMARY: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine to withdraw from the remaining 30% of the Donetsk region that Ukraine controls as part of a ceasefire deal. Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine would not withdraw from territories it controls because it was unconstitutional and would only serve as a springboard for a future Russian invasion. Zelenskyy said Putin wants the remaining 9,000 square kilometers (3,500 square miles) of Donetsk under Kyiv’s control, where the war’s toughest battles are grinding on, as part of a ceasefire plan. That’s why President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has categorically rejected any deal with Moscow that could involve ceding land after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested such a concession would benefit both sides, ahead of his meeting Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Zelenskyy has said that “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.” Such a deal would be disaster for Zelenskyy’s presidency Analysts suggest that freezing the conflict along the current front line is a more acceptable option for Ukrainians, although it’s not a long-term solution.

The previous deadline was set to expire at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. Had that happened the U.S. would have ratcheted up taxes on Chinese imports from an already high 30%, and Beijing would have responded by raising retaliatory levies on U.S. exports to China. US--PARAMOUNT-TKO

Paramount will become the new home to all UFC events in the US under 7-year deal with TKO Group

SUMMARY: Paramount will become the new home to Ultimate Fighting Championship events across the U.S. next year, through a seven-year agreement announced with TKO Group on Monday. Under the deal, Paramount will exclusively distribute the UFC’s full lineup of its 13 marquee numbered events and 30 “Fight Nights” on its streaming platform Paramount+ — with select numbered events also set to simulcast on CBS — starting in 2026. It’s a shift away from the UFC’s existing pay-per-view model, which Paramount and TKO say will allow the mixed martial arts programming reach more consumers nationwide. UFC events currently air on ESPN — which has offered tiered pricing for fans to view content across the sports network’s TV offerings and streaming platform ESPN+ since 2019.
