US--ELECTION 2025-JEWISH DEMOCRATS

How Democrats in America’s most Jewish city embraced a critic of Israel for New York mayor

SUMMARY: Zohran Mamdani, an outspoken critic of Israel, is the expected Democratic nominee for mayor in America’s most Jewish city and that’s raising alarms among some in the New York’s Jewish community. They’re worried about rising antisemitism and their waning influence. Mamdani’s performance in this past week’s Democratic primary also signals a sea change in the priorities of one of the party’s most loyal voting groups. An ideological realignment has been taking place among American Jews since the Hamas attack on Israel in 2023. And many Democratic voters, including Jews, have grown dismayed by Israel’s conduct in the war.

SUMMARY: Texas’ attorney general is praising a Supreme Court ruling upholding a state law aimed at blocking children from seeing pornography online. Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton said Friday that companies “have no right to expose children to pornography and must institute reasonable age verification measures.” Nearly half the states have passed similar age verification laws as smartphones and other devices make it easier to access online porn. The Free Speech Coalition says the Texas law puts an unfair burden on adults by requiring them to submit personal information that could be vulnerable to hacking. Takeaways from interviews with families forever changed by diseases that vaccines can prevent

SUMMARY: In the time before widespread vaccination, young children often lost their lives to devastating infectious diseases that ran rampant in America. Over the next century, vaccines virtually wiped out long-feared scourges like polio and measles and drastically reduced the toll of many others. Vaccine hesitancy grew as memories of these diseases faded. But some Americans know the reality of vaccine-preventable diseases all too well. Flint’s still-unfinished lead pipe replacement serves as cautionary tale to other cities

SUMMARY: Flint, Michigan, is still working on replacing all of its lead pipes. The effort was supposed to be finished years ago, but slow work, poor record-keeping and residents’ mistrust in their local government caused extensive delays. There’s now a federal mandate for communities to replace their lead pipes, so lessons from Flint’s failures are valuable nationwide. One place that used them was Newark, New Jersey, which experienced a lead crisis after Flint. Red Wings acquire goalie John Gibson from the Ducks in a trade at the NHL draft

SUMMARY: The Detroit Red Wings have acquired veteran goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks. Detroit sent backup goalie Petr Mrazek, a 2027 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-rounder to Anaheim for a player whose name has been in trade rumors for several years. No salary was retained. Gibson getting moved is the first domino to fall in offseason market in net with several NHL teams from Edmonton to Philadelphia and beyond looking for help at hockey’s most important position.
