• The February term of the Wicomico grand jury found that the third-floor jail of the County Courthouse Annex is in need of “major house cleaning.” Previous grand jury examinations over the past decade found the sheriff’s apartment and jail quarters to be in good repair. The review also found the office space throughout the building to be “inadequate” and that the recently proposed combined city-county office build should be built “with all deliberate speed.”
• Only 3-11 and playing badly all season, the Bennett Clipper got a 67-50 win over North Caroline. Coach Dick Kiley complimented his two leading scorers, Charles Gale and Ken Johnson. Meanwhile, Wi-Hi was beaten by Stephen Decatur, 93-72, to give Coach Ward Lambert’s team their 11th straight win. Tim Knapp and Eddie Johnson were the top scorers for the Indians.
• The Tri-County Cosmetologists Association held its annual hairstyling contest at the VFW home in Salisbury. This year’s competitive style was “The Question Mark.” The winners were: Betty Phillips, Beverly Lord, Marilou Trice and Cindy Daily.
• The Salisbury City Council will take up a 10-page ordinance that modernizes the city’s plumbing codes. The Eastern Shore Plumbing Association, headed by Buddy Lloyd, has already come out in opposition to several sections in the code. As drafted by Henry P. Wojtanowski, head of the municipal Bureau of Inspections, plastic pipe  would be allowed in some uses and terra cotta pipes could be used in drains and sewers. The plumbing association most opposes the terra cotta pipe allowances.
• North Salisbury filling station owner Oliver “Bob” Simpson has filed to run for Wicomico County sheriff. A Democrat, Simpson lost in the party primary four years ago. The current sheriff was appointed to the seat after the assassination of Sheriff Samuel Graham in a968. Sheriff Eugene M. Carey, a Republican, hasn’t said whether he’ll run Deputy William Shockley is considered a likely candidate, but also hasn’t declared.
• Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Kodak’s new point-and-shoot instamatic camera with its four-sided revolving flashbulbs was on sale at Super Giant in Salisbury for $13.88
• The Wednesday night TV lineup on WBOC: “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” at 8, “The Beverly Hillbillies” at 8:30, “Medical Center” at 9, “Hawaii Five-O” at 10.
