• Salisbury had five major grocery retailers vying for customers as Labor Day Weekend approached. Acme had two locations, one on Old Ocean City Road at Moss Hill Lane, another on Cypress Street across from the Perdue plant; Pantry Pride was in Salisbury Mall; Safeway had stores on Mount Hermon Road at East Main Street and at South Salisbury Boulevard; A&P had a store on East Main Street across from City Park and one on Route 13 in Fruitland; Giant Food was in the Giant Shopping Center on Salisbury Boulevard.
• Laura Day was the Championship Flight winner in the Elks Club Golf Championship. Sis Proffitt was the runner-up. Mary Lee Lloyd won the first flight, with Madeline Lynch coming in second. Mary Twigg bested Dot Morris to capture the second flight. The third flight winner was Audrey Wolf, followed by Sharon Hall.
• City Councilman Sam Seidel has requested he be removed from the two-man panel that is probing billing complaints related to the X-Ray Department at Peninsula General Hospital. In a letter sent to Council President W. Paul Martin, Seidel didn’t explain directly why he wants off the panel, but his critical comments in a public meeting last week have been attacked by a group of hospital radiologists. The other member of the panel is Councilman Norman H. Conway.
• Hawbuck Harness Ltd. was set to open next to Dockside Murphy’s on Truitt Street. The store was to specialize in dresses, sportswear and accessories, while “mixing an antique atmosphere with the latest in fine clothing.”
• Jack Purnell and Jack Smith have successfully defended their Senior Tennis Champions title at the Mid-Delmarva YMCA. The pair defeated Bill Patton and Joe Bachman, 6-4, 6-0. The same four were finalists in 1975.
• Shoppers at the Labor Day Clearance Sale at Cavanaugh Ford could pick from among four cars that were all being offered at the same $3,795 price: a 1976 two-door Ford Maverick, a 1976 four-door Granada, a 1976 Mustang II or a 1976 Ford Pinto Wagon.
