• The Wicomico County Council agreed to lease a strip of land behind the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center to the city of Salisbury for $1 per year for the site of a new skateboard bowl and ramp. Youth here have been seeking a safe place to skateboard; the ramp will be built with numerous safety features.
• Chez Jean-Pierre in the basement of One Plaza East was featuring a new Discotheque Dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.,. Draft beer was available for 35 cents. Bunky And The Inmates were set to appear at the Holiday Inn in North Salisbury. At the Northwood Restaurant & Lounge, it was 99-cent Spaghetti Night.
• In honor of America’s Bicentennial Celebration, Salisbury Mayor Elmer Ruark encouraged residents to begin flying U.S. flags in front of their homes. Flags should be flown for the next 21 days, beginning on Flag Day, as part of a national event called the “21-Day Salute.”
• The Salvation Army of Salisbury will open its new Oak Street facility to girls as well as boys. Girls between the ages of 6 and 17 will be permitted to use the club on Fridays between 1 and 7 p.m.; boys will not be permitted at that time. The SA membership fee for girls will be $1 per year.
• Wicomico County Council President Albert J. Bailey publicly applauded Dr. Arnold Maner and his associates for their progress in the development of the new Wor-Wic Community College.Maner told council members that state education officials had give authorization for the college to begin programs leading to associate degrees.
• The 20th Annual Salisbury Tennis Tournament was won by Greg Stephanides of Salisbury, who beat John Torrey, 6-1, 6-2. Among others, Stephanides defeated Jim Ketlesleger on his way to the finals, while Torrey defeated David Ryan. The doubles final will be played this week, when Ladd Layton and Paul Smith take on Gil Allen and John Wright.
• Jack’s Sanitary Service on Sunday won the 1st Annual Huddle Invitational Softball Tournament. Jack’s, the defending state Class A Champions, came out of the losers bracket to win five consecutive games on Sunday, beating Bay Printing, host Huddle, Peaky’s of Princess Anne and Charlestown (W.Va.) Race Track.
