Wednesday, July 19, 1967 --

• The city has hired a full-time lifeguard to oversee the public beach at Johnson’s Lake, located at the end of Philadelphia Avenue in north Salisbury. Swimming will not be allowed when the guards are not there. The guard will be in his stand from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. daily; two guards will be on duty during the weekends. Buoys and ropes will mark the shallow areas for use by small children. The other public beaches at North Lake Park across from the Johnson’s Lake beach and Schumaker Pond just east of City Park. City officials have been under fire all summer for refusing to ask the Health Department to test the water at the former swimming area near the Bandstand in City Park, and possibly reopening it.
• Ellen Bradley, 17, has been named the 1967 Wicomico County Fair Queen. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Bradley of Spring Hill Lane will now compete in the state beauty queen contest at the Maryland State Fair. An active member of 4-H, Bradley said she would like to one day become an office secretary.
• Employees at the Symington-Wayne Corp. plant in Salisbury are watching a proxy fight in New York City that could determine their company’s future. Symington-Wayne and Universal American are hoping to merge companies, but Dresser Industries of Dallas is seeking to block the alliance. Dresser recent offered to pay more for shares than Universal American, throwing negotiations into turmoil.
• Area boys between the ages of 7 and 18 are invited to the Salvation Army on Franklin Avenue tonight for Contest Night. Executive Director Richard Beals said contests include pie eating, balloon bursting, soft drinks consumption, cracker and marshmallow eating and group singing.
• Charles B. Sewell, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sewell of Mardela Springs, was presented the God And Country Award by Father Roger Jones, Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (the old Spring Hill Church) near Hebron. The award, the highest honor the church can bestow on a Boy Scout, was presented Sunday during church services. Sewell has been a member of Troop 282 for six years.
• Citizen Frank G. Reinhardt is on a mission to make sure the U.S. flag at the War Memorial on North Salisbury Boulevard is being properly flown. He said the flag doesn’t fly many days at all and is being flown incorrectly during times when flags are lowered for national mourning. Reinhardt has even asked car dealer Bob Lawrence, whose Volkswagen dealership is next door, to keep an eye on the flag and be prepared to help maintain it.
• James V. Wells, Vice President of J.L. Wells Co. Inc., has been named to the Board of Directors of Truckers & Savings Bank. Wells’ election was announced by Board Chairman R. Crawford Holland. Wells is also Chairman of Eastern Pile Driving Inc.
