• The Wicomico County Council was forced to move its Tuesday meeting in the County Courthouse because noise from carpenters in a room next door made the proceedings impossible to hear. Work on the room is part of an expansion that will give County Council staff members more space. Court proceedings have already been disrupted by the construction noise, according to Peoples Court Judge H. L. Loreman Jr.
• Officials for City Transit Inc. honored their bus drivers Monday night at a dinner held at the English Grill. Eight drivers were saluted with awards for safe driving. At the event, Mayor Dallas G. Truitt complimented the company on its operation, which while rendering a public service, also makes a profit. The line currently has eight buses, but is expected to add a ninth bus this year.
• The County Council is going on the road again to review locations where new paving and repairs are needed. Councilman George E. Burnett said the exercise – which used to be an annual occurrence – should resume for the benefit of new council members. Public Works Director Delbert M. Davis said his office rarely receives complaints about road conditions, but conceded the public might be more willing to call council members than his office.
• A new Grants Department Store will open next month in the Salisbury Shopping Center on Route 50 and Cypress Street, Grants Eastern Shore District Manager John H. Parker said. The store will offer a complete assortment of merchandise, including clothing, toys, furniture, appliances and a pet center. Grants will also have a nine-bay automobile service center.
• A 16-year-old boy was apprehended and another escaped in connection with an attempted theft on Monday of two men’s diamond rings from Castleberg’s Jewelry Store on Main Street, Salisbury Police said. Store Manager Tom Ellison said the pair came into the store at about 5:45 p.m. and one teen-ager reached over the counter and grabbed the rings. Store employees chased one of th teen-agers to woods off Camden Avenue, where he was apprehended by police. The other remains at large.
