• Salisbury Mayor Dallas Truitt generated a good deal of energy into a party held Monday on the Salisbury State College campus Monday when he dove into a crowd of students and pulled several of them to the steps of the Student Union to dance. Local radio disc jockey Jim King was there playing music as part of a Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce event to welcome the school’s 500-plus freshman class. “That mayor is really something,” one of the students said. “He broke the ice,” another laughed.
• A $1.52 million improvement program proposed for Salisbury-Wicomico County Airport might not get off the ground. City and county officials met Monday night with Airport Commission members and asked questions that would suggest a lack of confidence in the long-term prospects of the airport located just east of Salisbury. The plan includes a 1,000-foot runway extension and the installation of an instrument landing system.
• Maryland U.S. Sen. Joseph D. Tydings used a campaign stop in Salisbury to call for an end to the Vietnam War. At a reception at Chantry House on Monday, Tydings said he would vote Tuesday on the Senate floor to support the McGovern-Hatfield Amendment, which calls for a U.S. troop withdrawal within 18 months.
• Shooting a two-day score of 150, Dale Mason of Salisbury was the winner of the Feldman-Wyatt Golf Tournament, held over the weekend at the Elks Golf Club. The second-place finisher was Don Holdren of Pocomoke City with a 151, with Greg Shreaves of Green Hill Yacht & Country Club finishing third at 153 strokes.
• The Wicomico Medical Society will honor two of its own at a reception at the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, Pa. Dr. Henry Briele and Mrs. Raymond M. Yow, both of Salisbury, will be feted at an Sept. 11 banquet. Briele is President of the Medical and Chirurgical Society of Maryland, while Yow is President of the Women's Auxiliary of the Faculty.
