Tuesday, Oct. 31, 1995 --

• From his hospital bed, Salisbury Mayor W. Paul Martin Jr. vetoed the controversial landlord licensing ordinance the City Council passed last week. Martin, 75, a patient in the Coronary Care Unit at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, is being treated after suffering chest pains. City Clerk Brenda Colegrove said she had the veto papers ready when she visited the mayor, and he immediately signed them. The veto almost certainly nullifies the law, which would require landlords to register their properties and allow annual inspections. 

• During a visit to the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art in Salisbury, Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening held a news conference in which he outlined expected federal budget cuts that will affect the state’s revenues to the tune of $2.9 billion over seven years. The governor said a plan to move most Medicaid recipients to managed-care plans will offset part of the losses.

• Subcontractors Bear & Sons have begun work of the new Wicomico County Convention and Visitors Bureau Center on Leonard’s Mill Pond in north Salisbury. Gillis Gilkerson Inc., the general contractor, has said that the center should be ready for a public opening this April.

• Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services Inc. has helped orchestrate its 20th home sale since its founding in July 2014. Milton Howard and his family, who have been renters across town for the past 11 years, became the owners of a home on North Boulevard. A block party was held to celebrate the Howards’ move.

• Habitat On Maryland’s Lower Shore held a grand opening for its new building materials recycling store at the former Sear store in the Salisbury Mall. The store accepts tax-deductible donations of second-hand, overstocked or slightly damaged building supplies, household furniture and appliances, and sells them at a reduced price.

• Dr. K. Nelson Butler, Salisbury State University’s chief academic officer, has been named the university’s Interim President. Butler will succeed Dr. Thomas Bellevance, who retired last month after 15 years as President. The University System of Maryland Board of Regents is seeking a permanent replacement.

• Since late September, four of six shows slated for the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center of been canceled, three because of poor ticket sales. The latest show to be canceled, a tribute to country music legend Patsy Kline, only sold “a couple hundred” tickets, said Civic Center Director Robert Wagoner. Insisting the failed shows “are not a trend,” Wagoner described the recent show failures as “just a couple of unfortunate shows.” Last week’s show starring Tim McGraw was a sell-out and a success, Wagoner said.

• With a new Class A Minor League baseball team coming to Salisbury, fans are already lining up to buy season tickets to the new Delmarva Shorebirds. Event though the stadium on Hobbs Road is still under construction, Shorebirds General Manager Bill Davidson said more than 900 tickets were sold in a single day on Saturday, at an open house at the Salisbury Sheraton Inn. Davidson said there are still good box seats and club seats available for public purchase.
