Tuesday, July 6, 1976 --

• Wicomico County Councilman Vic Laws said he wasn’t surprised by his colleagues'’ cool reception to his proposal to enact a County Executive form of government. Laws called on the council to appoint a Charter Review Committee for the purpose of junking the council-administrator system in favor of a single-elected executive leader. Council President Lewis R. Riley said he wasn’t certain the county was large enough to benefit from and executive form of government.
• County Roads Department chief Kirk Banks said the Whitehaven Ferry will be closed for the next 10 days while it undergoes “emergency repairs” to the ramp on the Somerset side. About 100 cars travel on the ferry between Somerset and Wicomico counties each day in the summer.
• Professor Charles Chipman, principal of the former Salisbury High School, was honored at the Class of 1946 reunion, held at the American Legion Post on Springhill Road. Presiding were Freida Morris Wharton of Hebron, Alma Camper Perry of Wetipquin and Joan Toadvine Jolley of Salisbury.
• Denna Vonne Taylor of Salisbury competed in the 1976 Maryland National Teenager Pageant in Hunt Valley, Md. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs Robert L. Taylor was selected “Miss Hospitality” and received a $250 scholarship.
• Betty Jane Dashiell of Hunting Park Drive in Salisbury, has been named Small Craft Safety Chairman for the Wicomico Chapter of the American Red Cross. Dashiell, a health educator in the county school system, has taught water safety at the Red Cross for the last 15 years. She has two U.S. Power Squadron certificates.
• Elton’s Auto Sales on Truitt Street was offering a one-owner 1975 Chevrolet Vega, with 9,000 miles, for $2,495. Kawasaki Korner on Northwood Drive was offering an new K2-400 model for $995.
