Tuesday, Jan. 30, 1979 --

• During a visit to Salisbury, the national President of the United States Jaycees said there is a “distinct possibility” that women would be allowed to join the service group by 1990. As part of National Jaycees Week, Barry L. Kennedy -- a 32-year-old Nebraska farmer -- spoke at Dockside Murphy’s and said that while a poll found 80 percent of Jaycees members oppose female membership, self-determination on the part of local branches might have to be considered. Kennedy said that he is personally opposed to women entering the Jaycees on an equal footing with men.

• Delegate Lewis R. Riley is mulling whether to seek the Maryland Attorney General’s opinion before filing a General Assembly bill that would stagger Wicomico County Council terms. Riley said he would like to see a system similar to the one used by Salisbury, where three members run in one even-numbered election year and then the two other members run two years later. Terms for the five council remembers would remain four years, Riley said. A constitutional amendment approved in November sought to restrict such staggered terms. 

• In business news, William H. “Bill” Parker has been appointed Store Operations Manager of Benjamin’s in Downtown Salisbury. Owner Alvin Benjamin praised Parker’s promotion, pointing out that Parker had been with the company for more than 27 years. C.J. Bryan, Chairman of First Shore Federal Savings & Loan Association has named David Grier of R.D. Grier & Sons and Herb Fincher of Peninsula Roofing to the financial institution’s Board of Directors. Meanwhile, Ron Alessi Sr., President of Allstate Building Supply Co. Inc., announced the builder will open a new yard and warehouse facility on Arlington Road in Salisbury.

• Jim Lamer, Manager of Henson Aviation Co. operations at Salisbury Wicomico Airport, said passenger traffic could surpass 100,000 travelers in 1979. Lamer said there are now 32 daily passenger flights in and out of the Salisbury airport, all of the aboard a fleet of 30-passenger Shorts aircraft. The current flights go only to Baltimore and Washington, but Lamer said the airline is hoping to add routes to Norfolk and New York. Henson employs 68 people in Salisbury, he said.

• Movies being shown at theaters in Salisbury include: “Every Which Way But Loose,” starring Clint Eastwood and playing at the Mall Cinema; “Superman,” starring Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman, at the World Cinema; and “Sasquatch” at the Boulevard Theater.

• Three soap opera stars from ABC-TV’s “One Life To Live,” drew several thousand screaming fans to a publicity event at Salisbury Mall. Gerald Anthony, who plays Marco Dane; Candice Earley, who plays Donna Beck Tyler; and Richard Shoberg, who plays Tom Cudahy, signed autographs and posed for pictures. Anthony’s character recently died in a murder on the show, but he said he would soon be reappearing on the daytime drama, this time as Marco Dane’s brother.
