  • Plans for the new Pine Bluff Village have been approved. Expected to cost $2.5 million, the Riverside Drive complex will offer an innovative approach to assisting the elderly. People living there will receive care based on their needs at various sections of the complex. The site was the location for a former sanitorium and will be led by the Delmarva Ecumenical Agenency under the directorship of Donald E. Leiter.
  • State Sen. E. Homer White marked his 66th birthday by attending a General Assembly session until just past 2 a.m., then rolled out of bed at 6 a.m. for a tennis match in Annapolis at 7 a.m.
  • The Wi-Hi girls track team scored a narrow victory against the Parkside and Mardela teams at County Stadium, 59-56-49. Wi-Hi’s stars were Sharon Smith, who won both hurdle events, and Vanessa Miles, who won both the 100-yard and 220-yard events. Pam Shelton was the winner in the mile run, with a time of 6:40.9. Parkside’s girls set five new school marks, with Doris Joynes throwing a shotput 28 feet, 10 inches.
  • While driving to Fruitland to pay a cemetery visit, former Salisbury Mayor Rollie W. Hastings was injured when his car was hit from behind when he was turning right from Camden Avenue onto Pine Bluff Road. The 82-year-old New York Avenue resident was rushed by ambulance to Peninsula Regional Hospital with a back injury. Police said Carolyn Eva Wagstaff, 17, of Riverside Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
  • Dale E. Watson, chairman of the Wicomico Bar Association’s Law Day Committee, said Mayor Elmer F. Ruark was prepared to sign a proclamation setting May 1 as Law Day. This year’s theme is “Partners In Justice,” with local lawyers scheduled to make presentations at local high schools: Edgar A. Baker will speak at Mardela High School, W. Newton Jackson II and Charles R. Dashiell Jr. will speak at Bennett Senior High School, George H. White and Robert Spery will speak at Wicomico Senior High School and Russell Dashiell Jr. and Donald C. Davis will speak at the new Parkside High School.
