• At the Friday unveiling of the city’s proposed Fiscal 1981 budget, Councilman Sam Seidel called attention to the revenue columns for fire and emergency services and accused Wicomico County of once again not paying its fair share for fire calls answered outside the city limits. The county has repeatedly ignored city threats to cut off fire service to the county. Meanwhile, the budget also contains a 4-cent property tax hike, up to $1.54 per $100 of assessed value.
• Salisbury Zoo officials were lauding the Exchange Club for a $16,200 donation it made last year that allowed the zoo to build “cubbing” facilities that resulted in two new bear cubs reaching a survivable age this week. The bears, born Jan. 11, now weigh 10 pounds each. A year ago, the same mother gave birth to two cubs, but killed them. Officials cited a lack of an adequate facility in what was regarded as a tragedy in the community.
• More than 200 people attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Parker of Salisbury. The event was held at Grace Methodist Church. The Parkers were the first couple to be married in the church after it opened in April 1930.
• Mary Pusey Hughes, wife of V.V. Hughes of Salisbury, was the special guest at a single-day opening of the one-room Rockawalkin Schoolhouse on Pemberton Drive. Mrs. Hughes is the only living member of the Class of 1910.
• Continuing the tennis dominance she has demonstrated all season, Charlotte Haberstroh easily won three matches in Saturday’s District VIII Championships. Dave Ryan of Parkside showed why he was the No. 1 seed on the men’s side, shutting out his first two opponents and then beating Jeff Parker in the championship match, 6-3, 6-4. Ryan and Haberstroh now head to the state finals at Essex Community College.
• Celebrities Pat Harrington and Cliff Robertson were set to join Pittsburgh Steelers football star Franco Harris for next weekend’s second-annual YMCA Celebrity Tennis Classic. Harrington is the popular building superintendent on the TV series “One Day At A Time.” Robertson is best known for playing John F. Kennedy in the movie “PT 109” and recently starred with Robert Redford in “Three Days of the Condor.” Both actors played in last year’s event; this will be Harris’ first visit.
• Wicomico Youth & Civic Center officials are having trouble explaining why big acts that have been appearing at the new multi-million-dollar venue are failing to draw big crowds. This year, Johnny Cash, Pure Prairie League and Count Basie barely drew 1,000 people each. Heart and Blackfoot are scheduled for this summer.
