Today In Salisbury's History: Sunday, Feb. 16, 1964

  • Dr. Harold Eccleston, chief of anesthesiology at Peninsula General Hospital, began holding classes designed to teach hospital staff members how to perform emergency respiratory resuscitation. Using a mannequin purchased to teach the new techniques including external heart pressure, Eccleston was being assisted by Nurse Mildred Brittingham. The classes were to last two days and more than 100 employees were signed up.
  • Salisbury veterinarians reported a surge in distemper cases, a disease that is more than 50 percent fatal for dogs. The canine hepatitis symptoms include a chronic blinking of the eyes and a loss of usage of the hind legs.
  • Salisbury Mayor Frank Morris joined Jaycees President Richard Banks in cutting the ribbon for the 1964 Junior Chamber of Commerce annual Sportsman’s and Outdoors Show at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center.
  • Church Officers Sunday was to be observed at Wicomico Presbyterian Church. J. Edgar Harvey and F. Lee Insley Sr., having been formally ordained, were to be installed as elders. Mrs. Thomas S. George Jr. and George S. Appleton, also recently ordained, were to be installed as new elders.
  • Drapes will soon be installed in the dining room of the John B. Parsons Home For The Aged  in Salisbury. The Ladies Home Auxiliary has raised enough money to make the purchase, said the group’s president, Mrs. Fred Gardner.
  • Paul Martin Jr. announced he was a candidate for Salisbury City Council. The only incumbent to file thus far is Republican Harry O. Fullbook. Martin cited his community service and experience as a reason to elect him.
