  •  A surprise snowstorm dumped up to 5 inches of snow on Salisbury and most of Delmarva, ensuring that Christmas 1967 would be a White Christmas, and therefore one of the most memorable Christmas holidays in local history. Officials said the weather factored in a head-on crash on Snow Hill Road that killed two women.
  •  Pillsbury & Sherman Realtors will get a new name Jan. 2: E.D. Sherman & Associates. Margaret Pillsbury will open her own office on Fitzwater Street and head a new firm called “Margaret Pillsbury, Realtor.” Mr. Sherman and Mrs. Pillsbury issued a joint announcement that they will go separate ways after six years as real estate partners.
  •  In wedding news, Dr. and Mrs. Rufus Johnson of North Park Drive announced that their daughter, Patricia Ellen, would marry John C. Taylor Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Taylor Sr. of Ocean City. Meanwhile, Mrs. Catherine Lewis of Pine Knoll Drive announced her daughter, Patricia Anne, was engaged to Greg Lewis Stein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Stein of Woodland Road.
  •  Sheriff Samuel A. Graham was set to host his annual Christmas Eve Dinner and Open House at the county jail in the top of the Wicomico County Courthouse. About 25 to 30 guests were expected to join the inmates in the penthouse jail. Graham said the holiday was a chance “to let the bars down -- figuratively, not literally.” The sheriff said turkey would be served tonight, with leftovers being the menu for Christmas Day.
  • Continuing its “Operation Native Son” campaign, the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce was urging local young people to meet with local businesses and potential employers at a Dec. 27 business fair in the Wicomico High School Cafeteria. The aim of the program is to inform local young people about what many and interesting career options they have here, rather than leaving the community for jobs.
  • Ward Lambert, the Stephen Decatur High School basketball coach, made headlines when he declared that Eastern Shore teen athletes were -- while physically superior to Delaware and western shore athletes -- “not dedicated and lacking in self discipline.” Said Lambert: “What irritates me most is Eastern Shore coaches have to beg a boy to practice. The boys on the Eastern Shore have too much to do other than school activities.” Lambert said he was especially upset that the Eastern Shore high schools lacked good team basketball skills.
  • Hess Apparel held its annual employee Christmas event Saturday, at which time bonuses were given to loyal employees. President Lewis Hess honored three special employees with trips for two to Bermuda: Charles Nohe, general manager; Flora Taylor, credit manager; and Nellie Wilson, office manager. Vice President John Hess honored Carolyn Quillin with a cultured pearl necklace in recognition of her 15 years of service. The party concluded with a breakfast at Read’s.
