• The Salisbury City Council is looking for someone to replace one of the board’s longest serving and most important members. Norm Conway won election this week to the Maryland House of Delegates and will give up his 13-year perch on the council. The council will make the appointment. Those under consideration reportedly include Bob Caldwell, William Brooks, Michael Weisner, Duke Shannahan, the Rev. Harvey Dixon, the Rev. Howard Gordy, William Handy, Jill Barbon and Robert Menzel Jr.
• Pennsylvania Airlines, a new branch of Allegheny Airlines, announced it will soon offer daily flights to Philadelphia. Pennsylvania Airlines President William C. Clark said there will be four trips to Philadelphia each day and passengers will ride on one of several new Beachcraft 1900 aircraft, which can accommodate 19 passengers. Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development Director Bob Kiley said the addition offers greater options for business and vacation flyers. Service is already provided through Henson Airlines to Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
• The Maryland Lady, a New Orleans-style Mississippi River side-wheeler, is expected to begin offering Wicomico River excursions beginning in May. Princess Anne restaurateur Dick Smith said he and his wife have paid $350,000 for the 65-foot vessel. It will have a catering galley onboard and offer dinner cruises, routine river tours and be available for grand events such as weddings.
• This weekend the Community Players of Salisbury are producing “Li’l Abner” at the Wicomico Senior High School Auditorium. The play stars Joe Emonds as Abner, Mary Ann Dunn as Mammy Yokum, Chris Harris as Mayor Dawgmeat, Bill Meadows as Pappy Yokum, Bruce Oldham as Maryin’ Sam and Lisa Moore as Daisy Mae. Sam Sipe is the director.
• Joe and Mabel Long were feted at a testimonial dinner given at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center for the retiring State Senator. Long, 65, is now completing his 24th year in the General Assembly. About 800 people attended the event, including U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes, U.S. Rep Roy Dize and Maryland Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein. The jokes came loud and furious as friends, colleagues and constituents rose one after another to tell a joke or funny story featuring Long.
• Maryland Public Television will broadcast this season’s Salisbury Jaycees Christmas Parade. The Public Broadcasting affiliate will tape record the Dec. 7 event that is returning Downtown. Last year it the parade was held behind the Salisbury Mall, Jaycees President David Ennis said he is glad the event is back Downtown because the city’s core is a “nice setting.” Signing the broadcast agreement were Harry Naugle of Storer Cable, Gerry Burbage of MPT, and Michael Murray and Clay Gordy of the Jaycees.
• Lowell Hoprich of Salisbury’s Arby's Restaurants was celebrated as the 1 millionth person to fly on Henson Airlines this year. In a surprise announcement made at the Salisbury-Wicomico Airport, Hoprich was presented a bottle of champagne and round=trip tickets anywhere Piedmont Airlines flies.
