• Salisbury native Paul S. Sarbanes, a Democratic congressman and member of the House Judiciary Committee, read passages from the Constitution on Friday as part of his presentation in favor of President Richard Nixon’s impeachment. Sarbanes went on to introduce the 1st Article of impeachment, which the committee approved by a 27-11 vote.
• Asbury Church has named Gordon H. Turk as director of music. A summer organist in Ocean Grove, N.J., he will begin work after Labor Day. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
• Dr. Ross Pierpont, Republican candidate for Maryland Governor, attended a crab feast held in his honor in the Nanticoke River home of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Yow. About 150 people attended, including prominent local Republicans Josh Richardson of Ocean City, Delegate Carlton “Yank” Dize of Crisfield, Dr. Steadman Smith, Richard M. Smith of Salisbury, Lewis R. Riley of Parsonsburg and Eugene Carey and Bob Lawrence, both of Salisbury.
• Board members of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce have given their unanimous support for a technical and Community college to be built somewhere around Salisbury. Federal funds for an educational study are available through the state. The Wicomico County Council will hold a public hearing on the proposal Aug. 6. The Salisbury Chamber has 600 members.
• Elvis Presley impersonator “Little El” and “Velvet Britches” were set to appear at the Shawen Inn, known as “the Shore’s finest supper club” on Route 50 just eight miles west of Salisbury. Meanwhile, “The Exorcist” was playing at the Rio Theater in Downtown Salisbury.
• Pitcher Lee Webster came in from the bullpen in the fourth inning and went on to blank Cambridge for the rest of the game, leading Salisbury to a 3-2 win in the annual Pony League Invitational Tournament. E.C. Jones was the Salisbury starter, but Webster came in to slam the door on Cambridge, striking out nine batters.
• Thomas Hershey, chairman of the Mid-Delmarva YMCA Expansion Program, signed the contract of the Y’s new indoor pool. The added facility will be constructed of fiberglass and aluminum by contractors Superior Sales and Engineering of New Jersey. The pool will be 27-feet by 75-feet and feature six swimming lanes.
