  • The air-conditioned Hotel Wicomico on East Main Street has announced its weekend dining specials. Friday night is the all-you-can-eat Dutch Treat Picnic for $1.95, featuring 29 picnic items, including hot dogs and soda pop. Dress is strictly informal, with Bermuda shorts, slacks and sports shirts permitted. Saturday night’s $2.50 buffet is roast leg of beef sliced to order, with vegetables, salad and a selection of desserts.
  • West Main Street in Downtown Salisbury between Mill Street and St. Peter’s Street will be closed for 10 days while city workers install a new sewer line. Sewage Treatment Plant Commissioner Fred A. Grier Jr. said about 25 percent of the city’s raw sewage flows untreated into the Wicomico River and the new 14-inch pipe will direct that sewage to the city’s treatment facility.
  • Hubert R. White, the owner of the Downtown Salisbury hardware store that bears his name, died at his home at 223 North Clairmont Drive, of a heart condition at age 66. White opened the East Main Street store 20 years ago after long stints working at both Salisbury Hardware Co. on Railroad Avenue and L.W. Gunby Co.
  • Cool weather was credited with the turnout of thousands of shoppers for Downtown Salisbury’s annual Dollar Day sales bonanza. Downtown parking lots were jammed early and hundreds of people were already lined up to enter when stores opened at 9 a.m. “We had them both at the front door and back door today,” said William Powell, manager of R.E. Powell & Co.
  • The three Acme Meat Markets in Salisbury are offering new summer specials. Lancaster Round T-bones or sirloin steaks are priced at 95 cents per pound. Bacon is 43 cents per pound. Leg of lamb is 63 cents per pound. One-dozen ears of corn is 33 cents.
  • A Vienna woman returned to where she parked her car on South Park Drive — but it was gone. After calling Maryland State Police, she was transferred to Salisbury Police, who were quickly able to explain where the car was. Police said Mrs. Merrill G. Calloway of 608 South Park Drive told them she saw the unattended car begin rolling in the direction of Snow Hill Road when it went right, hopped the curb, and rolled down the hill into Beaver Dam Creek. Another witness said the car hit a tree on the way, which temporarily stopped its momentum, but then it rolled on into the water. Police called a wrecker to extract the submerged vehicle.
  • Detectives in the Salisbury Barrack of the Maryland State Police have a new tool they can use in their criminal investigations — a $1,800 lie detector machine. Cpl. Robert Weir will be the polygraph machine’s operator, having undergone special training at the National Center of Lie Detection Training in New York City.
