• Salisbury merchants are preparing for their biggest sales event of the year: the annual Salisbury Days. Taking place this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, shoppers will be offered fall merchandise at substantial reductions. Lewis M. Hess, chairman of merchandising promotion for the Retail Merchants Division of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce, said there will be nearly 100 percent participation by Salisbury stores. The event doesn’t just feature clothing stores – huge discounts will also be offered by businesses that sell jewelry, appliances, hardware and automobiles.
• Two-year-old Pauline M. Pruitt, Wicomico County’s first polio victim of the year, is showing improvement at Kernan Hospital in Baltimore, according to county Health Officer Dr. Seth H. Hurdle. The Johnson Road resident is receiving therapy to “re-educate” he muscles, according to Hurdle and any possible recovery will be part of a slow process.
• A government employee told Salisbury City Police he lost a check for $233.11 somewhere on West Main Street on Saturday near the Farmers and Merchants Bank. Anthony J. Serio, a Navy inspector at Roberts Industries who lives at the William Penn Hotel, said he lost the check at about 10 a.m. The check was not endorsed and Salisbury banks have been informed, police said.
• Judge E. Dale Adkins Jr. has appointed Salisbury orchardist Albert G. Allen as foreman of the newly formed Wicomico County grand jury. Presiding today at the opening of the court’s fall term, Adkins said county State’s Attorney Hamilton P. Fox Jr. will have several serious cases to present to the grand jurors, including a stabbing murder that took place in Salisbury Aug. 19.
• Former state champion Edgar German of Salisbury fired a perfect 50 score Sunday to win the weekly skeet shoot at the Tri-State Sportsman’s Club. Bill Hensley of Salisbury headed the 25-target event, posting a 23 tally.
