• Salisbury Police said the new year was beginning with a bad trend in local crimes. Police said two juveniles, ages 14 and 16, were arrested Saturday on charges that they snatched a purse belonging to Mrs. Nola Alford of 722 South Park Drive while Mrs. Alford was reading at a table inside the Wicomico County Free Library. The victim told police her purse was in a chair next to her when the older boy grabbed the purse, threw it like a football to the younger boy and the pair fled the building. Mrs. Alford pursued the boys outside and Patrolman Claude Smith, who just happened to be passing the library, saw the situation and pursued the boys. The youngsters were arrested near Peninsula General Hospital. Mrs. Alford’s wallet was recovered, but police said her purse was thrown into the Wicomico River from South Division Street. Also over the weekend, police said someone broke into Austin’s Market at 111 First St. and stole 36 cartons of cigarettes and a quantity of luncheon meats. Meanwhile, State Police reported a portable television was stolen from the American Legion Home on Spring Hill Road.
• Msgr. Eugene T. Stout presided over the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church wedding of Helen Carol Banks of Monticello Avenue and Norman A. Phillips of Annapolis and formerly of Salisbury. The bride was given away by her father, Edward G. Banks Sr. Her brother, Edward G. Banks Jr., served as an usher; her sisters, Ellen and Joan Banks were her bridesmaids and only attendants. The couple will make their home near Annapolis.
• Mr. and Mrs. Charles Andrew Johnson of Swann Road are the parents of the first baby born in 1965 at Peninsula General Hospital. The yet-to-be-named infant, a boy, was born at 5:28 a.m. on Sunday. The final baby born in 1964 turned out to be Robin Denise Kelly, whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kelly of 411 Liberty Street.
• The Wicomico County school board presented a $3.2 million school construction plan that will require a $2.5 million bond issue on the part of the County Council. The school board is seeking construction of a new Junior high school on East College Avenue, conversion of Salisbury High School in to the county’s vocational-technical school and build a new elementary school in Mardela Springs.
• The Wicomico County Council will open its 15-day legislative session on Feb. 1. Under the new home rule charter, council members will become legislators, taking up law making powers previously only held by the General Assembly.
