• Perdue Inc. President Donald W. Mabe was the commencement speaker at Sunday afternoon’s Wor-Wic Community College graduation, held in the Parkside High School Auditorium. Addressing the 70 graduates who made up Wor-Wic’s third-ever graduating class, Mabe presented an outline for students to succeed in the business world. “Should you not advance as rapidly as you feel you should,” Mabe said, “don’t blame anyone but yourself.”
• The Life Crisis Center in Salisbury is facing a crisis of its own – a financial crisis that could put the service out of business. Life Crisis needs about $12,000 annually to operate, but has fallen short in its grant-seeking efforts. Life Crisis helps those troubled with problems ranging from spousal abuse to alcoholism.
• Salisbury Mayor Elmer Ruark will host a “Chicken Roast” fund-raiser for congressional candidate Roy P. Dyson, Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. in Salisbury City Park. Designed to compete with 1st District Congressman Robert Bauman’s traditional Bull Roast held on the Upper Shore, the Picnic Island event has an admission price of $2.50.
• WBOC-AM radio farm commentator Tom Maquire was feted at Johnny & Sammy’s on the occasion of his birthday by two watermelon queens promoting the annual Watermelon Festival. National Queen Sissy Whitfield and Delmarva Queen Jennifer Wright led the breakfast crowd in singing “Happy Birthday” to the beloved radio voice.
• Matt Lange, 18, a recent Parkside High School graduate, stunned top-seeded classmate David Ryan, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5-3) at the Pepsi Junior Tennis Championship, held over the weekend at the Michael R. Riordan Tennis Center at the Mid-Delmarva YMCA. Kim Elliott was the winner in the girls division, defeating Michelle Humphreys, 6-0, 6-0.
