•  The Salisbury-Wicomico Transportation Agency will act on its own to liquidate its assets. The service shut down March 22 and has been losing an average of $6,000 a month because of higher-than expected expenses and low patronage. The city decided to go along with the county’s decision not to oversee the liquidation, though City Councilman Samuel Seidel said he firmly believes elected officials have an obligation to be directly involved in the process.
• Peninsula General Hospital has passed the $3 million mark in its quest to raise $4.8 million from the public to go toward its $26.2 million reconstruction and addition project. Hospital Board Chairman Oscar Carey said the public outpouring had matched expectations and saluted the community for the donations. Some 2,511 separate donations have been reported; anout $1.2 million has come from hospital employees and doctors.
• A trail of blood led city police to a suspect in a burglary at Berger’s Novelty Shop on the Downtown Plaza. MacArthur Green, 20, of Rose Street, was arrested at the Dennis Pool Room at 406 West Main St., two blocks from the crime scene. Green was taken to Peninsula General with a lacerated wrist. The showcase window of the novelty story was shattered with an object at about 9:30 Tuesday night. Sneakers valued at $30 were taken.
• Mrs. J. Albert Bloodsworth and James Hartman of Salisbury took first-place/east-west in last week’s Salisbury Duplicate Bridge Club matches. Page M. West and Robert L. Brodey of Salisbury came in first in the north-south matches. In all 26 players from all across the Lower Shore competed in matches held at the Riverside Homes Community Building.
• City Council President W. Paul Martin Jr. publicly commended Fire Chief Frederick A. Williams for his “coolness under fire” during the massive St. Patrick’s Day tank fire on Marine Road. Mayor Elmer Ruark adopted a resolution of appreciation to go to the eight fire companies that participated in fighting the Exxon oil fire.
