• Last-minute tensions were rising across the city as Salisburians prepared to elect three new City Council members. Republicans and Democrats each have three candidates on the ballot and the highly challenged races have generated a war of words not seen in many years. The Republicans are led by incumbent Harry O. Fullbrook and include Thomas O. Mumford and radio personality John William Psota. Democratic incumbents W. Paul Martin Jr. and Robert Powell are seeking re-election, and are joined by Frank P. Maher. There are 4,167 eligible voters in Salisbury, with Democrats holding a 3-to-1 registration advantage.
• Ralph “Buzz” Smith, chairman of the Jaycees’ Miss Wicomico Pageant, said the Entries Committee is scheduling interviews for contestants who wish to compete in the May 16 event. Contestants must be between the ages of 18 and 28, be high school graduates and have never been married. In addition to a talent and appearance competition, each contestant must be prepared to give a three-minute talk.
• Jerry Morris, son of Salisbury Times Editor Oscar L. Morris of South Pinehurst Drive and recently a sophomore at the University of Maryland at College Park, has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and will leave immediately for Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Meanwhile, Dr. and Mrs. Andrew C. Mitchell of Somerset Avenue have returned from a weeklong cruise to Bermuda.
• Perfect attendance pins were passed out to 11 Kiwanians in a dinner meeting held in the Wicomico Hotel Ballroom. Vernon H. Powell led the list with 24 years perfect attendance, followed by Harry Gillis with 22 years. Other notables were George Benedict with 16 years, and Robert Menzel with seven years.
• Mrs. Richard Cullen, a Delmar resident and native of England, will direct the final Community Players play of the 1963-64 season, “Come Blow Your Horn.” Mrs. Cullen has performed in several leading roles for the Community Players and has theater experience from when she lived in England. Her husband is a prominent Salisbury lawyer.
