• Workers at Wayne Pump on College Avenue have ended their 70-day strike. The final deal of a three-year pact has been hammered out and workers will vote on the contract -- which is expected to be approved -- on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Civic Center.
• Miss Sharon Carey, 17, daughter of Mrs. Caraleigh Carey of Liberty Street in Salisbury, was crowned Miss Fire Prevention Queen. Miss Carey accepted the crown from last year’s winner, Miss Colleen Mobray. The runner-up was Miss Janice Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin R. Cooper of Elberta Avenue. Miss CArey will represent Salisbury in the Fire Department Pageant and Parade to be held Oct. 1 in Federalsburg.
• Pfc. Elmer Neal Davis, a 1964 graduate of Salisbury High School, was killed in Army service in Vietnam. His wife, Julia Davis of Kiowa Avenue, was notified by the Pentagon on Thursday. Davis was drafted into the Army in July 1966. Prior to that, he was employed at Artcraft Electric in Salisbury. He was last home on leave in April and is survived by three small children.
• Contractors have put the finishing touches on the huge new parking lot that has been constructed between Camden Street, Circle Avenue and South Division Street in Salisbury. The new parking lot will allow shoppers to easily park and access the new Downtown Plaza.
• Employees in the Wicomico County Courthouse are looking for answers in what might be causing a sound that is heard between 1:30 and 3:30 each afternoon. A musical instrument of some kind seems to reverberate from the area of the second floor. Some people say it’s a ghost, some say it’s something mechanical, others suspect a practical joker. Said People's Court Clerk Ruth Hales: “It sounds like a bugle.” Said Deputy Sheriff John Walston: “Everyone's talking about it.”
• Wi-Hi head football coach George Schoepf said he will start Albert Phillips at quarterback in tonight’s big game at Laurel High. Wi-Hi’s starting front line is considered the best in the region, with J.R. Lloyd, Hall Ewing, Tyrone Conway and Danny Shockley. Frankie Berry will play left halfback and Bob Baysinger will start at fullback.
• Helen McDaniel of Hess Apparel, was feted for working 60 years in retail businesses in Downtown Salisbury. When called to John Hess’ office this week, she said she feared the store owner might be demanding her retirement -- instead she was greeted with a roomful of co-workers yelling “surprise.”
