  • A 39-year-old Canadian woman was released to immigration authorities for immediate return to Canada. She was arrested earlier in the week by Salisbury City Police and confined in the Wicomico County Jail after she was found to be in the country illegally. Detective Jerry Mason entered the United States in October for a two-week visit, but had overstayed her visa.
  • Wicomico County’s five-year $6.1 million capital improvements budget came under lively debate at the County Courthouse on Thursday night. The budget includes $1.44 million in first-year spending for school additions and equipment needed to start a countywide kindergarten program. Questions about the need for kindergarten appeared to be on most of the attendees’ minds, with governmental spending critic James W. Betts repeatedly stating that kindergarten programs cost tax money with no proven benefit to students. County Council President Richard S. Wootten said kindergarten programs were a growing trend nationwide and referred Betts to schools Superintendent Royd A. Mahaffey for further explanation.
  • Wicomico County came out “clean” in Wednesday’s statewide police raids on gambling devices. State’s Attorney Alfred T. Truitt and Sheriff Samuel A. Graham said Wicomico was just one of five counties in Maryland in which state troopers found no illegal machines in private clubs or restaurants.
  • In social news, Sally Adkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Dale Adkins Jr. of Camden Avenue Extended; Arthur Cooley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cooley of Wicomico Creek; and William Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward V. Evans Jr. of Tony Tank were to arrive home today for the holidays from the Kent School in Kent, Conn.
  • Used cars for sale at Powell Motor Co. on South Salisbury Boulevard included a 1965 Pontiac Catalina Convertible for $1,995, a 1966 Buick Skylark Gran Sport for $2,395 and a 1965 Buick Electra 225 for $2,595.
