  • George Bozman and R. Russell Hitch of the local branch of the National Taxpayers Coordinating Commission, questioned the County Council’s intent to float a $3,402,018 bond issue for capital improvements to Wicomico schools. The men appeared before the council to question the bond bill’s effect on the county’s $1.96 property tax rate. Councilman Lewis R. Riley assured the pair that the council would meet its obligations within the current tax rate. Hitch, a local insurance man, also questioned what he called the county’s “give away programs.” He told the council: “It’s my theory: If a person doesn’t work, then he shouldn’t eat.”

  • After considering the matter for exactly 6 minutes, the Wicomico County Board of Education agreed to ban smoking in the system’s schools. No one appeared at the board’s hearing on the issue. The board’s decision follows a state Board of Education vote backing a statewide smoking ban in the public schools.

  • Sheriff Eugene M. Carey announced visiting hours at the county jail would be drastically cut. Visiting Day would only be held on Wednesday, with the hours limited to only 2 to 4 p.m. Previously, the jail had been open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

  • Mrs. Kevin McGrath of Alvin Avenue in Salisbury was one of three runners-up in the national Pillsbury Bake-Off held in Atlanta, Ga. She was presented a $2,000 check for her winning recipe, “Sticky Buns.”

  • In a move to thwart continued break-ins and vandalism, a night watchman has been hired to patrol Mardela High School. Sheldon B. Dawson, the county’s assistant superintendent of schools, said there had been five break-ins at the school in recent weeks.

  • The County Council asked for further study of an engineer’s estimate that $50,000 to $60,000 would be needed to stabilize a parking area at Salisbury-Wicomico Airport to accommodate 13 Viscount airliners. The surplus airliners were recently purchased by a group of local business and professional men. Since then, where to keep the airplanes has been a subject of controversy.

  • Mike Kenney, a James M. Bennett junior, set a school scoring record in a 76-73 win over North Caroline in Denton. Kenney scored 34 points.

  • The featured match at that night’s third-round U.S. National Indoors play at the Civic Center was the contest between the nation’s 5th-ranked tennis star, Bob Lutz, and England’s Mark Cox. The town was still abuzz over Bobby Wilson’s second-round, three-set victory over Dick Stockton the night before.
