CAMBRIDGE — In the last week three raccoons retrieved from the Sandy Hill area of Cambridge have tested positive for rabies.

One raccoon came from Bayberry Way and two were located on Oakley Street. Health Officer Roger Harrell advises Cambridge residents to be aware of their surroundings while outdoors. The Oakley Street attacks occurred at night, while the Bayberry Street attack happened during daylight.

There were no human exposures. Four dogs were exposed to the rabid raccoons. Fortunately, all the dogs were current on rabies vaccinations and did not require euthanizing. To date there have been seven animals test positive for rabies in Dorchester County; 6 raccoons and 1 skunk.

The Dorchester County Health Department will hold their fall rabies clinics next month. The date and times appear here. Health Officer Roger Harrell strongly recommends that all domestic animals be vaccinated to prevent the spread of the virus.
