Three Downstaters top Delaware All-Class football teams

DOVER — Three Downstate football players were among the top award winners as the state’s high school coaches announced their All-Class teams on Monday.

Dover High’s Mikey Stevenson was named the state Lineman of the Year in Class 3A by a vote of the Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association.

In Class 1A, Indian River defensive end Rashad Hopkins was voted the Defensive Player of the Year with Seaford’s Roman Maddox being named Lineman of the Year in the class.

The other top award winners in Class 3A were Salesianum’s B.J. Alleyne (Offense) and Middletown’s Tristen Graham (Defense).

In Class 2A, the players of the year were Caravel’s Jordan Miller (Offense), Caravel’s James Steel (Defense) and Archmere’s Jack Dellose (Lineman).

The other winner in Class 1A was Tatnall’s Rashan LaMons (Offense), a native of Smyrna.

Stevenson earned first-team All-Class 3A honors as the top vote-getter at both defensive and offensive tackle for the Senators. Arguably the junior lineman’s best game came in a 27-16 win over eventual state-champion Sallies.

Stevenson finished with nine tackles, two quarterback sacks and a pair of QB hurries as Dover beat the Sals for the first time since 1988. It ended up being Sallies’ only loss of the season.

In 2011, Stevenson’s other brother, Anthony McPoyle, was also named the state Lineman of the Year.

Seaford’s Maddox also earned the most amount of votes at his two positions, defensive tackle and offensive guard. Indian River’s Hopkins was named the top Class 1A player at defensive end.

All told, Downstate players were first-team selections at 27 positions on the three All-Class teams. This past season was the third since the state went to a three-tiered system.

The three DIAA state champions were all New Castle County private schools: Salesianum (Class 3A), Caravel (Class 2A) and Tatnall (Class 1A).

The first-team All-Class picks will be honored at DIFCA’s annual banquet on Jan. 29 at Dover’s Modern Maturity Center at 5:30 p.m.
