Third man taken into custody in shooting death of Laurel teen

LAUREL — A 21-year-old Laurel man was taken into custody Monday in connection with an April homicide that left a teenager dead, Delaware State Police said.

Shyheem Latham-Purnell was detained at a residence in Salisbury, Maryland. Upon extradition to Delaware, authorities said he will be charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and first-degree conspiracy.

The case involved Corey Mumford, 18, of Laurel, who police said suffered multiple gunshot wounds behind the Wexford Village Apartments on April 14. He was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead.

Two men were arrested in connection with the death April 21 and May 18. They were facing charges of first-degree murder and other offenses after  extradition from Maryland to Delaware, police said at the time.
