Theresa M. Whalen

Theresa M. Whalen, of Dover, died Sunday Oct. 3, 2010 at home. She was 91. Mrs. Whalen was born Sept. 13, 1919, in Tampa, Fla., to the late Angelo Mortellaro and Rosalia Castellano Mortellaro. She helped in the kitchen of the Playhouse Nursery School in Dover until 2008. She spent most of her life in Washington, DC and was a resident manager of a high rise, she was the president of the Resident Managers Assoc. of Maryland. Mrs. Whalen had moved to Dover in 1982 and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was a banquet server at the Modern Maturity Center and a member of the Stepping Seniors. Mrs. Whalen was a people person and had a real love for people. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Thomas James Whalen, Sr. Mrs. Whalen is survived by her son, Thomas James Whalen, Jr. and his wife Carol of Wallace, N.C.; daughters, Arlene Bowers and her husband Harry of Dover, Christine Dennis and her husband Danny of Selbyville; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great, great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be held noon, Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St., Dover. Her family will receive friends, at church, from 11 a.m. until service time. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Meals on Wheels, c/o The Modern Maturity Center 1121 Forrest Ave., Dover, DE 19904 or Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Highway, Dover, DE 19901. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guest book signed at torbertfuneral.com.
