Thelma Bowman Gaines

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Thelma Bowman Gaines, of Chestertown, Md., died on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at Queen Anne's County Hospice House, Centreville, Md. She was 94. Mrs. Gaines was born in Baltimore, Md., on Feb. 14, 1917. She and her family moved to Millington, Md., three years later where she was raised by her family. A graduate of Chestertown High School, Mrs. Gaines married Paul D. Bowman on April 8, 1939. They lived in Millington where she and her husband owned and operated The Mill House Restaurant from 1949-1954. In 1955 they opened Paul D. Bowman Insurance Agency and the following year they moved and relocated the business to Chestertown. They operated the agency until retiring in 1979. Mr. Bowman predeceased his wife in 1981. She later remarried to Clemens Gaines and he also predeceased her. Mrs. Gaines was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #86, Chestertown, where she had served as Worthy Matron, Emmanuel Episcopal Church where she served on the alter guild, and also presided as Judge of Orphans Court for Kent County. She was also active within the Chester River Yacht and Country Club, the Red Hatters Club, as well as the Chestertown Garden Club. Mrs. Gaines enjoyed gardening, cooking, golfing, but most of all her grandchildren. She is survived by her son, The Honorable Paul M. Bowman of Chestertown, Md.; grandchildren, David A. Bowman of Worton, Md., Erin B. Zierfuss of Chestertown, Md., and Jeffrey P. Bowman of Annapolis, Md.; along with great-grandchildren, Flynn, Asher, and Mackie. Services will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chestertown, Md. Interment will follow in Asbury Cemetery, Millington. Relatives and friends are invited to Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. An Order of the Eastern Star service will begin at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Queen Anne's County Hospice House, 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.
