Taylor: Decoupling tax codes is not Delaware’s answer

Posted

Editor’s note: The following was also sent to the writer’s state representative, Frank Burns, and state senator, Dave Sokola, both D-Newark, prior to the House passing legislation to decouple the state’s tax code. The measure awaits consideration in the Senate.

I believe the Opinion by Rep. Mike Smith, R-Pike Creek, is an excellent explanation of decoupling and why Delaware should not do it.

I do not want a political response because Mike Smith is a Republican. This should not be a partisan issue. This affects all Delawareans, Republican or Democrat, and as the song goes, red and yellow, Black and White. It is time to apply Department of Government Efficiency-style cuts to the inflated Delaware government, which has exploded since 1992, and tighten our belts. When I worked for Sodexo, its continuous motto was do more with less. It was the food contractor for DuPont cafeterias for many years. When I was growing up, my mother faced my father changing jobs and taking a pay cut. It was a tough time but paid off in the long run. So, we had creamed chipped beef for dinner — one package for three people, and no steak. My father put cardboard in his Cordovans, rather than having them resoled. And, yes, he worked a second job for years. And I have had to do the same over the years, when my husband lost jobs.

Wake up: Delaware taxpayers are not a bottomless pit. Cut back on entitlements for illegals. By definition, they came here contrary to the law. They are getting free health care, free education, free Medicaid, free Social Security, free everything. And, yes, deport them for breaking U.S. laws. My last knee replacement cost $80,000. I wonder why? To cover illegals’ health care!

Wake up and scale back Delaware government. Do not decouple. You are the stewards of Delaware taxpayer dollars. Now, put your big boy pants on and do it!
