Summer Sendoff returns to Cambridge Main Street on Sept. 12

MD-summer sendoff 4x-082515 Tricycle racing has been part of the Summer Sendoff fun in recent years.

CAMBRIDGE – This year, Cambridge Main Street will hold its annual Summer Sendoff event – Blues, Brews and Barbecue – on Sept. 12 from 5-10 p.m. This returns the event to Second Saturday after last year, when Summer Sendoff was pushed back one week to coincide with IronMan Maryland.

“We knew last year was a one-time deal, and we were happy to do it because of the impact IronMan Maryland would have on our city and downtown,” said Cambridge Main Street Executive Director Brandon Hesson, whose organization will host a separate event on Oct. 3 to provide entertainment for the full-distance triathlon and its participants. “This brings Summer Sendoff back as a more local event to say good bye to the busy summer season, and we still have the opportunity to showcase our entertainment district the week of Oct. 3.”

Summer Sendoff is a street event on Poplar and Race streets, featuring street vendors, barbecue-inspired foods, live entertainment and craft beer. RAR Brewing will return again as this year’s sponsor of the Main Stage, and will serve its full line of beer – each brewed in downtown Cambridge at their Poplar Street taproom and new canning facility on Gay Street. RAR may also be showcasing its canned Nanticoke Nectar, set for distribution around the state in the next few weeks.

The Main Street Mile is another popular part of Summer Sendoff, and features teams from local businesses and community groups participating in a three-part relay race on the RPS ISG International Speedway located on the 400-block of Race Street.

RPS ISG International is one of the largest independent insurance brokers on the Eastern Shore, offering a full range of commercial business and personal insurance options. Each member of the four-person teams will have to ride a miniature tricycle, run in flippers and a scuba mask, and then race with an egg on a spoon until everyone has gone. In this fun triathlon, the fastest team gets bragging rights and a $100 donation made to their favorite charity. This event begins at 6:30.

“This is the second year that we’ve been able to partner with RAR Brewing and RPS ISG International,” said Mr. Hesson. “I think it says a lot that we have two industry leaders right here in our city, and each recognizes the benefit of a strong downtown commercial district. We hope we can continue these creative partnerships for many years.”

Summer Sendoff is a free street festival, so please don’t miss this last opportunity to enjoy live music and cut loose downtown.
