Speak Up: Lawmakers debate bill preventing DNREC regulations related to vehicle sales

Posted

Senate lawmakers discussed legislation June 7 that would remove the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s regulatory authority for new car sales. The legislation introduced April 19 by Senate Minority Whip Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, was a response to the department’s ongoing consideration of adopting California’s Advanced Clean Cars II regulations.

During consideration of Senate Bill 96 in the Senate Environment, Energy & Transportation Committee, Sen. Pettyjohn outlined a number of reasons why the state should not move forward with Advanced Clean Cars II. These reasons included a lack of infrastructure to support electric vehicles, such as the state’s scarcity of charging stations and residential areas where construction of chargers is not suitable; charge time; range; and the cost to purchase and upkeep such vehicles.
