Wilmington landfill uses latest technology for Delaware’s trash
Wilmington’s Cherry Island Landfill is one of the most advanced in the country, serving as a model for the future of waste management. In the last 20 years, several civil and environmental engineering projects helped add decades of life to the facility. Also, in 2011, the landfill’s expansion project was selected as a finalist for the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award by the American Society of Engineers, one of the most prestigious awards in that field. The project was one of the most massive reinforced-earth berms ever used in an environmental application, standing 60 feet high and 8,000 feet long.
