Sosne: Summer doesn’t stop federal employees’ service

Posted

Ken Sosne is the president of the Delaware Federation of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.

Though summer is upon us, federal employees both active and retired continue their commitment to service. The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association is the largest advocacy and nonpartisan support group for these workers and has five Delaware chapters, from Wilmington to Sussex County. Even though our meetings have paused for the summer, much is going on in the federal community. We are supporting advocacy, community and education.

Active employees in Delaware continue delivering the mail, inspecting our food, working with the transportation sector, keeping boaters safe and maintaining and supporting our national parks and wildlife management areas. As we all head outdoors to fish, camp and boat, federal park spaces become very important to us all in Delmarva.

Retired federal employees are active with food pantries, lighthouse restoration work and community gardening. There are too many efforts to list.

Much of this works to improve our quality of life and our outdoor recreation, as we look to enjoy a slower summer pace. The impact is there, but you might not see it. As such, I ask that you thank your public sector employees. People look to demean and attack public sector employees without understanding that many of the services we enjoy are provided by public sector and federal employees, without regard to political views.

I make a simple appeal: If you are part of the federal employee community, active or retired, please join us. If you are part of the public, please thank federal employees for what they do and make mention of the great work NARFE is undertaking. Our members are our strength, and with 18,000-plus federal employees in Delaware, we would like to increase membership and involvement. Postal workers, you, too, are part of the NARFE family.

Please come see us at the Delaware State Fair in Harrington at the end of July and feel free to reach out to myself or go to narfe.org.

We would like all who are eligible to join us. If you’re part of the general public, please follow ourpublicservice.org to discover what is happening with good government.

Federal employees, regardless of employment status, continue to serve. Do not believe the negatives, as so much positive touches us and is unseen.

I thank you for your time. During America’s 250th anniversary, it is the strength of service that helps to advance a positive world.
