Smoot: We deserve what we vote for

Posted

One man's opinion today is that we are getting what we deserve with the inauguration of a man who is a convicted felon, a business failure proven by his many bankruptcies, a scam artist who never pumped a gallon of gas or shopped in a supermarket for his family but convinced his supporters that a phony billionaire could relate to their daily regimen of supporting a family with a working person's earnings while lying about his 2020 election loss and spreading lies about America's greatness. This man is the perfect example of the failure and ignorance of his voters to know the truth about our greatness and the accomplishments of the recent President because they followed the Republican lies on social media. Whining and crying seems to be the description of a Trump supporter. Ignoring climate change (see the Ocean City protests against wind farms while hurricanes worsen, and wildfires break out everywhere) and statistics that show immigrants help our economy, especially farmers and watermen. And his vindictiveness is a reflection of his supporters and their bias against people who don't fit the white evangelical image so coveted by these supporters. How many of these same supporters will support billionaire buddies of Trump getting big tax breaks while attacks are made on welfare, social security, health care for low earners (Obama care) and we are burdened with taxes and tariffs that raise all our purchases costs? Who knows what will happen to our national security with the incompetent appointees in positions of power?

It has often been said we get what we deserve. These next few years will demonstrate "if ignorance is bliss", we will ultimately pay for it. My many years of teaching government and history have led me to believe that Trump voters not only know how to whine and cry but fail to respect the teachings of most religions. Lying and liars are evil, and Trump's appointees seem to reek of that quality. What does that say about those who swallowed his lies and voted accordingly?

My hope is that the resilience we have shown as a Constitutional democracy will come to the fore and we will be able to overcome this absurdity in the White House.
I hopefully will still be alive to say I told you so. I also hope I will be able to forgive them "for they knew not what they did".
