Smoot: Some Delmarva residents are OK with offshore wind

Posted

Once again, the usual foes of conserving our environment (Ocean City, Maryland’s mayor and council; Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md.; and our local senator — please note all are Republicans who seem to ignore the coming flooding from rising sea levels that will inundate Ocean City sooner than later) have emerged to scream loudly about the recent ruling that windmills can be allowed off our Delmarva coastline.

Rest assured — they will be prominent when it comes time to fund beach replenishment that costs us taxpayers millions of dollars without an equal return to those who may or may not want to enrich the businesses at the beach. The shortsightedness of these politicians is hypocritical at best and self-serving (at the expense of saving our planet) at worst.

I am tired of the constant referrals to polls showing that all Delmarvans oppose wind farms offshore. I would wager that a correct poll, not a self-serving one, would show that thousands on the “shore,” like myself, would be interested in seeing windmills working offshore. Not only are they fascinating, but the towers they would be built on would serve much like the sanctuaries of shipwrecks sunk to enhance fishing.

Why is it that shortsighted Republican lawmakers, for the most part, subscribe to Donald Trump’s antienvironmental policies? Following the self-serving interests of our president and his cronies, like Andy Harris, is a perfect example of why the future of Ocean City will be underwater. If I live long enough, I will be first in line to say, “I told you so!”

Seventy percent of the American people reject Trumpism. When will the “shore” get on board and work to help all the people, not just the vested interests of a “Make America Great Again” crowd and the few who own Ocean City? I love our natural attractions, like our beaches. I also want our grandchildren to enjoy them. These politicians seem to want to guarantee that it won’t happen. It may be time to remove them from their posts at the next election opportunity.
