Smith R. Carson, 77

DOVER - Smith R. Carson, of Dover, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at home. He was 77. Mr. Carson was born Sept. 15, 1932, in Harrington to the late Major Smith Carson and Catherine Derrickson Carson. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a bartender for 30 years. Mr. Carson had a lifelong love of harness racing. He worked as a groom for Olin Davis as teenager until he joined the Air Force in 1953. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Doreen Scarbrough. Mr. Carson is survived by two daughters, Catherine Grzeszczak and her husband Jeffrey, and Teresa Carson along with their mother, Ruthellen Carson, all of Dover; his brother, Wayne Carson and his wife Kathleen of Wilmington; six grandchildren, Shawn Trader, Brandi, Victoria, and James Grzeszczak, Amanda and Samantha Scarbrough; a nephew, David Carson; a niece, LeeAnne Davis; a special friend, Elizabeth Carson; and his little buddy, Chris. A memorial service will be from 3 to 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, trackside at the Harrington Raceway. Local arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapels, Dover.
